Utopia began as a small, subjugated province within Empire, a sprawling federation that advertised elections, civil rights, and the rule of law while practicing none of them. Empire was ruled by a rotating cast of ideological strongmen whose main achievements were corruption, plunder, human rights violations, and a near-religious devotion to invading its neighbors. Conditions in the outer regions—Utopia among them—were bleak.

During one of Empire’s more disastrous wars of conquest, with its military overextended and its government in disarray, Utopia and several other repressed territories declared independence, paid heavily for it, and survived.

The other breakaway republics soon collapsed back into the tyranny they had escaped. Utopia instead rebuilt, through collective will and structural reform, determined never again to be dominated from outside or corrupted from within. It named itself Utopia and hoped for the best.

Its existence remains precarious. Empire still claims Utopia as historically integral territory, and the neighboring states of Dystopia and Gulag—also former provinces—assert the same. Only their mutual distrust has kept any of them from trying to reclaim it. Even so, Utopia has achieved a rare combination of stability, security, and prosperity.

Kredipedia puts Utopia’s odds of surviving the next decade in its current form at under 15%. With bot guidance, that rises to 53%. Utopia is considering our offer.
